I also put up a sales list of Angora Goats. I do not think I will have many does to sell next year due to a heavy buck year (and cutting back and selling so many this year.) I should have a few nice bucks next year though.

I may have a few crossbred ewes for sale and will have crossbred ewe lambs. This year the crosses are out of two rams:

A moorit Bond X Corriedale with a fine, crimpy fleece. Sorry no moorit ewes! (One wether has an amazing moorit fleece......)

A white (throws colors) BFL/Teeswater/Wenslydale with a long, silky and locky fleece. Oh, there are also two ram lambs out of this boy.
Then we were corralled into the pen next to the barn. I was in the first mob to go in the magic silver box. We are kind of scared of the box, but also kind of like it. We ran in and the human shoved the door closed before we could change our minds and get out. Then the box shook and moved. The door opened and we were in the middle of paradise. New green pasture with nice hills and shade trees. Hey, I remember this place we were here before and the box took us home, now it took us back. I like it here.

The box drove away. I think the human might control the box as the human gets in the noise machine (truck) that seems joined onto the box.

The box came back! I and all my friends came running to see who is going to come out of the box. I stood by the door baaing as I could hear my lamb. My lamb came running and got a nice drink from me. Boy my lamb is getting big! He is almost as tall as I am! I can hardly smell his tail (to make sure it really is him not some sneaky lamb trying to steal my milk.)

The box kept coming and going and each time it came more friends or family were coming out! So each time it came we all had to come running and circle round it until the new mob came rushing out. Then we were all here and the box didn't come back. The noise machine did as the human needed to give us water. The noise machine makes water (from a tank), that must be magic too. We always come running when the noise machine get here as our human comes out. We like our human. She I think our human is a she her baa, is it called a baa?, isn't very deep. She is reassuring to me and my friends and sometime gets us new tasty food! So we always come, cause you never know when the new food will be available.

Bye for now, I am hungry and am eating dinner,

My poor Craigrothie had to be put down. Craigrothie was a special pet. I have had many sheep (um well, over several hundred, last year I peaked at about 230ish sheep/goats) most are just sheep. Craigrothie was special. He was one of a set of first AI twins from UK semen and he was white, all my other sheep up until he was born were colored. Craigrothie was named after Craigrothie, Scotland.

He was a tame and friendly boy. He loved his scratches and would come running over to be petted.
He was a peacemaker in ram pen, not aggressive ever. Craigrothie also attacked a dog once. My brother came home with an adult male black lab and every day Craigrothie tried to get out until he succeeded. He butted the poor dog several times and "won", I caught

him and put him back (that dog was rehomed with a very nice lady who had dogs.) He was protecting "his" flock. Most sheep are scared of dogs and will run away. (It was summertime and I run my ewes and rams together as they don't breed in mid-summer.)

Craigrothie was an excellent jumper, yeah, he got to stay because he was my pet. He was a pest at breeding. BUT he NEVER smashed a fence.

Craigrothie had a very nice fleece and his lamb fleece won a Champion under Martin Dally at the WI Sheep and Wool Festival. I kept his last fleece from spring and am going to spin it . :) A couple of his daughters live on in my flock, but they are just sheep. There will never be another Craigrothie.Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11586123852648939448noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5941278546769386674.post-52473209577676138262013-09-26T19:34:00.002-07:002013-09-26T19:42:12.074-07:00Sheared Goats

The contest was at the Genesee County Fair near Flint, MI. There were 12 professional machine shearers, 2 beginner machine shearers, and 5 who entered in the blade shearing (3 of whom are professional machine shearers.) There are not enough blade shearers to have more than one division. I was competing against Kevin Ford, shearer of more than 30 years; Doug Rathke; Sy Caryl; and Alex Moser. All of these guys have been shearing for way longer than me!

(I believe was also on the US team for the World shearing competitions last year) placed first in the professional machine shearing division and would have done better with better blades (the ones he had were some that were given to him and were dull), he was the fastest! We are judged on quality and time. The judges have a clicker and click for any second cuts, and flesh cuts, and tags left on. I was second for quality in the first heat. Kevin was 33 and I 39 for quality in the fist heat. I was the slowest though. I didn't do as well in the second heat as I got really nervous and cut a few (minor nicks.) Overall I am happy with how I did. There was also prize money which helped pay for the trip and everyone who entered got a free shearing singlet, I didn't take one as I could have worn it for a dress! They had X large and XX large only!

Looking down from the road to the pasture where the sheep/goats are. Andy, the guy I'm renting this from had the land divided into three pastures for beef cows. He wants to get beef cows again, but hasn't used the land for 10 years. So I can graze it for, at least this year.
I have to say sometimes I wonder why I work so hard and keep sheep (like in the winter when it is freezing cold or when things go way wrong, like this spring's horrible kidding or when hay price jumps and lamb price dives) and then I remember how enjoyable and relaxing it is to see a happy flock grazing. It is also enjoyable to set up fence and pull weeds (I pulled armfuls of milkweed-poisonous to sheep) in such pretty surroundings. Who else gets to live and work in "vacation land", hiking and sight seeing as part of their job!

And something new and improved, a water tank! I used to use 5 gallon pails, but they would not work going down a hill so my sheep kindly bought me a present! I like this and am going to be glad to use it on our land too where a hose is hard to reach.
I also may have a few moorit and possibly another black ram lamb/s to sell. I want to keep one and after that I will have the rest available.

Commercial Ewes:

I also am going to be selling a few crossbred ewes. I have two BFL X Shetland ewes, one is a grey katmoget and the other "English Blue" or charcoal. I have white Corriedale X Shetland, Shetland X Merino and Coopworth X Shetland ewes. I am not particular as to who gets sold vs. kept so you can choose. All types of fleeces (these girl's fleeces have won prizes at fleece shows including Champion, Reserve Champion and a Best of Show) sell for me and they are all good milky mothers or they are sold for slaughter only. I bred the crossbred ewes to an Ile De France X Dorset ram and the lambs are growing fantastically well.

If you are looking for crossbred ewe lambs I have plenty of white Coopworth X Shetland ewe lambs and also one black Corriedale/Coopworth/Shetland (very nice fleece on her!) $150-175 each. Group discount available depending on how many you take.

Here are some picture of some of the crossbred girls with their Ile De France X Dorset sired lambs. The ewes will do well under a variety of rams. They could be bred to a Coopworth, Romney, BFL, CVM or Corriedale ram for more commercial ewes with great fleeces or put to a terminal sire for market lambs.
I am selling them because I have their sister, mother or daughter and am cutting back on my flock. I am wanting to reduce the burden on my pastures, barn and want more time to shear sheep! My dream is to go to NZ for a level 2 shearing class some day.

I will also be offering PS23 Craigrothie, F1 Skeld (threw a couple polled boys) in Nov/Dec. after I use him. He is super friendly and not aggressive. He has a soft, silky, crimpy fleece that is around 26 microns (I can look it up if anyone wants to know.) Good tail.

I also am going to sell 8-12 crossbred ewes. They are all good mothers and have excellent handspinner fleeces. If you are looking for a certain cross ask.
Some people have too much time on their hands!I just deleted around 40 or 50 spam comments on my blog. I noticed a couple comments that did not make sense. One was on a post of lamb pictures and was talking about brussles and a video (no video on that post.) Some were in broken English. So.... now I have set my comments to moderate.Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11586123852648939448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5941278546769386674.post-23949951671953371972013-05-09T06:05:00.002-07:002013-05-09T06:07:05.593-07:00Shearing This post is all about shearing! My little sister can't understand why anyone would want to get all dirty and greasy and sweaty and wrestle sheep. The reason... it is addicting! There is something almost magical about taking a full fleeced ewe, tipping her over and doing a sort of dance pattern around her while gliding the blades through her wool and watching the wool roll off. Then all of a sudden she is a new sheep!

Before taking the class from Tony Dobbs I was at a point of not wanting to shear all of my sheep anymore. My blades were so dull I had to chop at the wool and I did not know the pattern. I was taking forever to shear a sheep. (I tried the machine shearing pattern and it felt really awkward, that is because the blade shearing pattern is different.) I took the class because even if I hired a shearer I would still have to shear some of my sheep, since Shetlands are not all ready at once and I don't want to wait until May to do my crosses or goats and a shearer would not want to come 4-6 times a year! (I could not find anyone who could sharpen blades and I tried out about 6 different people! I could not afford to buy new blades for every 15 or so sheep.) So back to the class...

I took the class and learned how to sharpen blades so they are razor sharp and can gleefully slice the wool. The pattern is great, it makes total sense once it is learned, I thought, "Aha, wow, this is great, it just keeps flowing." The shearing pattern is to have the sheep's weight on your legs, not your back. The pattern is also the most efficient way to shear.

Blade Shearing this is a video (to get back to my blog, just back click) of a blade shearer going over the pattern. (I can't seem to get the one of Tony on here, so this one should work.)

In New Zealand the shearing schools have 4 levels. http://www.tectra.co.nz/ Someday it would be cool to take the next level in NZ and shear in sheds there. It would also be cool to shear in Scotland if I get good enough to travel for pay. Even if I don't get good enough (fast/strong enough) I still want to shear my flock and several small flocks!

They say that it take a shearer 8-10 years of full-time shearing to become highly proficient, so I have a lot of practicing to do!

Yes, shearing is very physically demanding. They say if one shears for 8 hours it is like running two back to back marathons. I am working on getting stronger. I'm doing sit-ups, push-ups, hamstring/leg exercises and working on getting my left arm stronger. (Instead of routinely carrying things with my right arm, I'll switch to using my left.) My left arm is not my dominant arm and is used a lot during shearing.

The second day of shearing all day in a row I felt awful. Every muscle hurt (even my feet) and I felt sick. David Kier, a professional machine shearer said the pain is why most learners quit shearing. He said that once one shears in under 4 min. the pain goes away. Yeah, he still hurts after a hard day, but not the awful burning pain of learning. Right now I am shearing sheep about 2 days a week and I think I'm getting a bit stronger. (Here is an article by David, http://www.weau.com/home/headlines/50501692.html. David is one of the best shearers in WI and is very knowledgeable in wool and general sheep knowledge.)

My goal in taking the class was just to shear my own sheep a little faster with better blades. Now I am shearing for others and I really like it. It is nice to drive through the country to a spot I've never been and meet new people and shear their sheep. It is a good feeling to see a pen of freshly sheared sheep.

So far I've gotten to shear some Horned Dorsets, an English Leicester, a hair sheep cross, Babydoll Southdown, Coopworth, Shetland, Angora goats, Corriedale, an Ile De France X Dorset, Polypay X Dorset, Wenslydale, Polypay, all my crossbred girls (Shetland crossed with Corriedale, Coopworth and/or BFL) and some unknown breed crosses. Each sheep breed is slightly different to shear, some are easier than others. So far I think the Polypays and their crosses are the easiest.

I will leave you with a video of a blade shearing shed.
I have a bunch of pictures, but can't get them on the computer right now (it has been updated and does not want to upload any pictures.)

I found this picture of a Finn ewe with seven lambs. ( http://www.kitsapsun.com/photos/2012/apr/13/288959/#axzz2PgqWXIuK )
I'm sure glad mine don't have 7 each or I'd have over 450 lambs!!!!
After: Happy bald sheep! They all ate their dinners and settled down to ruminate. As you can see they are quite pregnant, 1 week off from lambing.

I was going to wait until after lambing for these girls, but changed my mind for several reasons. 1. less barn space needed 2. It is easier to shear before lambing on non-primitive sheep 3. I wanted to practice more!

It took me two days to do them. The first day I did 12, and had to stop early as a neighbor was coming to clean out the barn. The second day I did the rest, 16. I am slower than I hoped to be, but definitely faster than shearing with the sheep standing up, and these girls were hard as they have such big bellies. This brings my tally to 39 sheep since the class and I did about 12 there. Someday I'll be faster!
Shetland girls in the rain. I rarely have my Shetlands and the crosses in two groups. It's kind of nice to see them as two groups. They have all been crutched (back ends and lower bellies sheared) so they don't get as messy, and so the lambs can find the milk bar easier. They will be sheared after lambing, in April/May depending on when they get the rise.

Everyone has been vaccinated and dewormed, I just need to buy some hog panels for lambing jugs (I foolishly let the ones I had get frozen in the deep snow/ice, well I need more anyways.) I also need to rearrange a few animals to free up the new sheds I built for lambing.) Then let the <strike>good times </strike> sleepless times roll!
Well, I'm finally getting around to getting the post on Zeilinger up. I got to visit Zeilingers when I did the shearing class, we got to go there for a tour. Winter set in and I'm just milking cows, feeding sheep, doing some exercises (to get in better shape for shearing), washing wool and dyeing wool. I also have been spinning occasionally.

Note: Kristen Rosser took some of these pictures as well as myself. Some I'm not sure who took. She took the pictures of the lake and the town.
The dehairing machine. It works by humidity and blowing air. The coarser fiber fall to the bottom and the fine stuff makes it to the end. I asked the guy who was running the machine (it had Pygora) how much loss there was. I was shocked that the Pygora LOOSES 75%, alpaca and llama are not nearly as bad. In my opinion, why raise a Pygora? One looses so much during processing and then it costs a lot to process. Angora goats can have amazingly fine fleeces and the only loss is grease. They are also easier to shear, I would think. (I've never shearer a Pygora, but did shear 2 Alpine/Angora crosses once.)
The coming machine. It runs carded roving through all the fine teeth and combs it removing all hay and noils. It is the machine that performs magic, in my opinion, turning icky hay filled neck wool into dream fiber.
